The Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) at Western University is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about media, communications, and information. We study technologies, systems, histories, and practices to understand the role of media and information in democratic process and the social and cultural determinants of power and agency. The Project Assistant role is part of the Project Coordinator/Manager non-union job class. The Project Assistants are an integral part of the Research team and will liaise with all research team members through all project phases. The incumbents will work collaboratively to coordinate research participants, undertake research studies, analyze research data, and facilitate knowledge mobilization of the research study findings. The Project Assistants will gather knowledge about and conduct qualitative research on museums and cultural diplomacy. The work focuses on assessing the diplomatic orientation of museums and their impact. Reporting to the Project Director, the Project Assistants will use their existing knowledge and skills to support internal and external communications with all project stakeholders. Project Assistants will provide significant support to the research team and assist in gathering data, assessing data, and undertaking knowledge mobilization activities. This role with focus on understanding the potential and capacity of museum diplomacy.
The key accountabilities of this role include the following: recruiting and scheduling project participants; maintaining accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary; managing and responding to project related email; attending project meetings; conducting qualitative interviews; analyzing qualitative data; summarizing project results; and assisting in preparing articles, presentations, reports, etc., as needed.
The Project Assistants will be responsible for supporting and overseeing all aspects of one or more projects within a research group in FIMS. The incumbents will coordinate and provide ongoing leadership of the project, and manage all project phases by setting deadlines, assigning responsibilities, and monitoring and summarizing progress and results. The incumbents will engage various stakeholders, ensure project support and sponsorship, and provide leadership and direction to the project team.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in the humanities (e.g. art history, history, communication, fine art etc.; Masters degree in the humanities preferred; Current students are open to consideration; Project Management Professional certification is an asset
Experience:
- 2 years' work experience in a related field; Previous experience as a Research Assistant is an asset
Skills, Abilities & Expertise:- Graduate research experience in the humanities; Collaborative research experience; Qualitative research experience
- Academic publication experience (conference presentations and published writing)
- Strong knowledge of the Canadian museum sector, with a focus on art and culture
- Strong knowledge of fields of public and cultural diplomacy, as well as cultural relations
- Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize with an eye to consistently producing high-quality work and meeting deadlines in a demanding environment
- Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
- Proven team working skills with experience working in a large group, while successfully completing their own tasks independently
- Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks and meet regular deadlines, while working independently and with minimal supervision
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the project's events and activities
- Familiarity with techniques for planning, managing and coordinating multiple projects, with competing priorities that involve a variety of stakeholders
- Project management skills to ensure team roles are clear, milestones are communicated and deadlines are met
- Familiarity with best practices for change management
- Excellent communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with all levels of the organization (written and oral); experience with formal academic writing with an attention to detail and proofreading abilities
- Beginner to Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel and Outlook); experience managing and communicating through email
- A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Results-oriented with the ability to motivate and coach employees to meet high performance standards
- Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
- Strong client focus with a desire to achieve results
