Job Description
Reporting through the Transit Security & Fare Enforcement Supervisor, to the Contract Administrator, Security Investigations / Fare Enforcement Coordinator and Project Manager. Transit Security is responsible for ensuring the safety and security for Grand River Transit and Region of Waterloo properties and assets. Transit Security also acts as a Transit Ambassador, representing the Region of Waterloo and Grand River Transit, displaying professionalism and exceptional customer service.
Having access to your own personal vehicle is preferred.
Shifts:
Must be able to commit to the assigned schedule consisting of:
- Rotate through 8 to 12 hour shifts of days, evenings and nights (continental shifts). Must be available weekdays/weeknights, weekends and statutory holidays.
Responsibilities:
- Conducting mobile and foot patrols of Grand River Transit facilities and assets.
- Provide fare enforcement duties on board Light Rail Transit Vehicles, operate handheld fare inspection device, and ensure customer compliance with fare policy.
- Delivering emergency/incident response, investigation, patrol, crime prevention, fare and revenue protection, detection, deterrent and customer service to protect GRT employees, customers, facilities and vehicles.
- Acting as a Transit Ambassador with emphasis on good customer service and public relations.
- Enforcing the Region of Waterloo Code of Use By-law 13-050, Trespass to Property Act and Criminal Code, Federal Statutes and Provincial Acts.
- Providing assistance to the public and first response to emergency situations.
- Investigating and responding to complaints and incidents on board trains, busses and transit properties.
- Conducting full investigations and assisting police services when required.
- Conducting patrols to maintain officer presence and ensure crime prevention.
- Reporting criminal activity to Waterloo Regional Police Service and providing assistance if required.
- Assist emergency personnel with medical emergencies.
- Dealing in confrontation with unruly persons, intoxicated persons, mental health and substance abuse.
- Carry out court duties as required.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Skills:
- Physically and mentally able to perform cubes of Transit Security, having regard to personal and public safety.
- Be of good moral character and habits, meaning that you are an individual other people would look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity.
- Strong and effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong situational awareness, problem solving and decision-making skills
- Must be calm and confident while dealing in confrontation with unruly persons, intoxicated persons, mental health, and substance abuse.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and deal with confrontational, dangerous, and stressful situations.
Qualifications:
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- At least eighteen (18) years of age.
- Fluency in English.
- Graduate or current student of Police Foundations/Law and Security program or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Completed minimum of four years of secondary education.
- Preference will be given to those with experience in a customer service and enforcement environment.
- Must be able to commit to an assigned schedule, rotating through eight (8) to twelve (12) hour shifts of days, evenings, and overnights. Must be available weekdays/weeknights, weekends and statutory holidays.
- Knowledge of the Trespass to Property Act.
- Knowledge of Criminal Code of Canada.
- Knowledge of Region of Waterloo Code of Use By-Law 13-050.
- Knowledge of Ontario Use of Force model.
- Knowledge of Powers of Arrest.
- Valid Ontario Class G drivers license - must have own vehicle on reliable transportation.
- Valid First Aid/CPR Level C.
- Ability to complete and pass mandatory use of force/handcuffing/baton training.
- Valid Ontario Security Guard License.
- No criminal convictions for which no pardon has been received.
- Employees are subject to have police record check and fingerprinting done.
