The Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL) department leverages a collaborative, socio-ecological model for student development and care. The cross-functional team includes Student Connection and Community Care (Office of Student Community Standards, Student Support and Intervention Coordinators), Residence Life and Education, Testing Services, and Student Wellbeing (Accessible Learning and Counselling Services, Wellness Education and Programs, and the Health Centre). The SWEL team offer pan-College services across all Humber College/University of Guelph-Humber campuses.
Job Details
Position Title: Counsellor in Residence
Hours: 35 hr/week – **please note this role works a compressed work week (Monday to Thursday 11am-9pm)
Faculty/Department: Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL)/Student Success and Engagement (SSE)
Reports to: Associate Director, Mental Health and Counselling Services
Campus/Location: North and or Lakeshore campuses (2 days/week at each campus). Please note this position is fully in person.
Salary: Academic starting salaries are determined based on qualifications and years of related experience as detailed in the collective agreement for academic employees.
Length of role: This is a two-year, limited term contract
What you will do:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Mental Health and Counselling Services, the Counsellor in Residence provides mental health support for students living in residence at Humber’s North and Lake campuses. The Counsellor in Residence will be a key member of both the Mental Health and Counselling team, as well as the Residence Life team and will be expected to participate in Residence Life team meetings, strategic planning, training, programming, and assessment efforts
Key activities of the role include:
- Provide Mental Health Counseling for Students Living in Residence: Conducting initial assessments of student needs and the development of personalized care plans; providing counselling supports through goal-oriented, single-session approaches; providing short term counselling for students with more complex presentations and needs; support in the development and delivery of clinical groups, and conducting risk management and suicide assessments, providing crisis interventions, and case management including campus and community referrals.
- Documentation and Case Management: Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions, assessments, and interventions. Adhere to ethical guidelines and legal requirements for documentation and record-keeping.
- Outreach and Education: Develop and deliver evidence informed psycho educational workshops, presentations, and educational materials on various topics relevant to the Residence community. Topics may include stress management, mental health literacy, resilience, managing conflict, healthy relationships, and academic success strategies.
- Community Programming: Play an active role in supporting the planning and implementing residence life programs and initiatives focused on mental health and wellness. Offer insights and suggestions for activities that promote personal growth, community engagement, and mental health awareness within the residential community.
- Residence Life Staff Training and Development: Contribute to the training and development of resident advisors, residence life coordinators and other residence life staff members. Provide expertise and guidance on supportive conversations, motivational interviewing, supporting residents in distress, crisis management, and other relevant topics to enhance their ability to support and engage with residents effectively.
- Collaborative Partnerships: Work closely with other campus departments, such as, health services, academic advising, accessible learning services and student support and intervention coordinators to provide integrated support and ensure a holistic approach to student well-being.
- Student Support and Advocacy: Serve as an advocate for students' well-being within the residence life team. Collaborate with resident advisors, residence life coordinators, residence life managers and other staff members to address student concerns, develop proactive initiatives, and create a positive residential experience.

What you bring to the role:
- University-level credential enabling engagement in provision of mental health / services and psychotherapeutic interventions (e.g., Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Education, or a related discipline) from an accredited program
- Current registration and in good standing with a regulatory body under the Regulated Health Professions Act able to perform the Controlled Act of Psychotherapy (e.g., College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, College of Social Work and Social Service Workers)
- Knowledge of Ontario Mental Health Act, the Psychotherapy Act, the Health Care Consent Act, and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), as well as College professional and ethical standard requirements
- Successful completion of supervised counselling by a recognized counselling professional
- Minimum of three (3) years of counselling / mental health services within a postsecondary institution, community organization/network or health care setting, with demonstrated experience coordinating care across sectors, agencies, and interdisciplinary professionals
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience providing individual and group psychotherapy
- Strong generalist skills with specialization and/or expertise in interpersonal psychotherapy, DBT, ACT, and/or other evidence-based practices
- Experience conducting client assessments, including risk assessments and a demonstrated capacity to make appropriate recommendations for treatment, support, and risk management
- Proven clinical experience and the ability to offer time-limited therapeutic interventions based on sound counselling modalities; training in evidence-based, brief therapeutic interventions such as single session therapy
- Demonstrated competence in managing crisis situations independently and working with clients who present with severe emotional difficulties
- Strong working knowledge of mental health and accessibility issues and experience supporting clients with complex mental health challenges and disabilities in a youth / emerging adult population
- Expansive knowledge of relevant community services and mental health resources in the community; strong existing relationships with community service providers an asset
- Demonstrated competency in addressing issues of sexuality, disability, gender, ethnicity, class, and religion within a complex multi-racial and multi-faith environment
- Demonstrated dedication and attentiveness to systemic issues, social determinants of health, and intersectionality in serving historically marginalized students
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing development of equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging competencies as well as wholistic, anti-oppressive, and decolonizing practices within a counselling environment
- Demonstrated research and assessment skills related to program evaluation and assessment of client outcomes
- Experience working autonomously and as part of an interprofessional / collaborative care team
- Committed self-care practice to maintain resilience
