POSITION TITLE:
Peace Counselor – Chetwynd, BC
CLASSIFICATION:
Children Who Witness Abuse Counselor - Temporary until incumbents' return
PROGRAM:
PEACE - formerly known as the Children Who Witness Abuse Program
REPORTS TO:
Department Manager
JOB SUMMARY:
The Children Who Witness Abuse Counselor/Group Facilitator is responsible for:
· The planning and provision of individual and group counselling to children and/or their parents who have witnessed violence
· Promoting community awareness regarding the impact witnessing violence has on children,
· Prevention activities in schools.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Children Who Witness Abuse Counselor will have:
· Bachelor degree in a related human/social service field as well as one year experience in a supervised childcare setting; or
· Four years combination of education and experience.

The Children Who Witness Abuse Counselor must demonstrate:

· An awareness of art/play therapy;

· Tact and diplomacy;
· Sensitivity and a non-judgmental attitude;
· Good boundaries and self care practices;
· A willingness to work flexible hours;
· A strong understanding of and a commitment to a feminist informed practice; and
· A person centered practical approach
· Capacity of working in extreme crisis and traumatic situations.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
Must have an understanding of family violence, the dynamics of emotional, sexual and physical abuse and family systems.
· Awareness of art/play therapy
· Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently
· Good group facilitation and public presentation skills
· Good verbal and written communications
· Good relationship skills with staff, professionals, and agency personnel
· Ability to work as a team member with staff, service recipients, police, social workers hospital workers and other pertinent individuals or professionals
· Independent ability to use computers and familiarity with relevant software programs
· Must have a valid driver’s license
· Crisis Response Training
· First Aid Certificate
· Suicide Prevention & Intervention Certificate
· Understanding and competence in working with diverse cultures, particularly aboriginal people.

HOURS OF WORK:
21 hours per week, flexible to meet program needs
RATE OF PAY:
$36.10 per hour
