Indigenous Visual Arts Programmer
Term: This position is a 10-month term position which runs from September 2023 to June 2024
Job Type: Term, Part-time (14-21 hours per week)
Location: Art Gallery of St. Albert, St. Albert, AB
Workdays: Flexible, 2-3 days per week, Tuesday to Thursday; flexible hours 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
Wage: $28.96–$31.41 per hour
Art Gallery of St. Albert with the Arts and Heritage Foundation has an exciting opportunity for a highly energetic, creative and organized individual.
This position supports artistic achievement and visual culture in St. Albert and the surrounding area by providing research, design and delivery of Indigenous-based visual arts programs to inspire and educate community members.
Indigenous visual arts programs present, represent and share Indigenous knowledge and traditions while providing connections and cultural context to contemporary Indigenous practices and art forms.
The Art Gallery of St. Albert is part of the Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert, a non-profit and registered charity that operates and manages the Art Gallery of St. Albert, Musée Héritage Museum and the St. Albert Heritage Sites on behalf of the City and people of St. Albert.
Job Description:
- Research, design, prepare and deliver curriculum-based Indigenous visual arts programming that centers on Indigenous knowledge, concerns, and worldviews and reflects Indigenous pedagogies.
- Create experiences designed for school groups, homeschool groups, community groups, or gallery tour groups, which occur at the Art Gallery of St. Albert, St. Albert Place Visual Arts Studios, at schools and in the community.
- Spark curiosity amongst students in various subjects, engaging participants intellectually and kinesthetically through visual arts activities.
- Organize program equipment and supplies, ensure proper health and safety practices, and maintain clean facilities at all locations.
- Provide excellent customer service to all participants.
- Become an integral part of a team working to create a model of cultural understanding for staff and volunteers.
- Communicate any programming feedback or concerns to Program Manager in a timely manner.
- Collect data and evaluate Indigenous visual arts programming appropriately.
- Facilitate connections and new partnerships within local Indigenous communities.
- Build positive relationships with colleagues, teachers and students.
Ideal candidates possess:
- Passion for the visual arts, traditional crafts and storytelling
- Knowledge of First Nations, Metis, Inuit art and perspectives
- Experience instructing art to children, youth and adults in group settings
- Passionate about working and learning with children
- Studio experience with various media (clay, painting, printmaking, fibre art and other media)
- Effective classroom management skills for diverse groups and age levels
- Excellent communication skills with all types of learners
- Proactive, flexible and positive approach to all aspects of the job
- Committed, punctual and dependable team player
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Dropbox and email
- Class 5 Driver’s License and vehicle for travel
- First Nations and/or French language skills an asset
- Current Emergency First Aid/CPR certificate
- Ability to lift and handle heavy art material totes and supplies
- RCMP criminal records check and a vulnerable sector check required upon job offer

Salary Range and Hours
- September 2023 to June 2024 (10-month contract)
- $28.96–$31.41 per hour
- 14–21 hours per week. There may be occasional evening or weekend events or classes, so flexibility is required.
- Programs occur at the Art Gallery of St. Albert, the St. Albert Place Visual Art Studios, Heritage Sites or at schools.
