Job Description

OCAD University (OCAD U), Canada’s university of the imagination, provides a vibrant and stimulating environment for its faculty and students. Committed to excellence and contemporary approaches to education, OCAD U offers seventeen undergraduate programs, seven graduate programs, and a variety of continuing education courses in art, media and design. OCAD U is currently seeking outstanding, creative and collaborative teachers in the following sessional opportunities/opportunity.


The Faculty of Arts & Science invites applications for the following anticipated course offering in the Fall/Winter 2023-24 academic year. VISD-2006-301 : Graphic Design History-20th Century

(September 6, 2023 - December 6, 2023; Thursday, 11:50AM - 2:50PM; In-Person)


COURSE DESCRIPTION: This lecture-seminar course engages in a study of communication arts and media within the context of the 20th century. The course focuses on the relationships between technological, social, economic, political and cultural changes that have shaped and influenced the development of communication arts. The range of subjects covered includes the impact of the two world wars and the Vietnam War; the influence of the Bauhaus, the developments in editorial design, the first attempts at computer composition, corporate design, electronic imaging and advances in print and pre-press technologies.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Meet regularly with the faculty and students on grading, course content and other matters as needed; assist in the evaluation of student work, using criteria established by the supervising faculty; work with faculty and other academic staff in support of the University’s educational goals and objectives; participate in the provision of a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities.


QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate should have a graduate degree, undergraduate degree or be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program; a demonstrated understanding of pedagogy, e.g. course preparation, teaching methods, evaluations standards, etc., English as a Second Language training is considered an asset; strong organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; sound knowledge of, and commitment to, healthy and safe work practices; previous teaching assistance experience at the post-secondary level.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Teaching Assistants are hired annually on a per-course basis with fixed-term annual contracts renewable to a maximum of 3 years.

HOURS OF WORK:

Hours per week are based on enrollment.


COMPENSATION:

$32 per hour 6% in lieu of benefits plus vacation pay, as applicable, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act.
