Login to your McGill Workday account and apply to this posting using the Find Jobs report (type Find Jobs in the search bar).Job Description:The Science Education unit of the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) is committed to working in partnership with McGill members and community partners to co-develop sustainable Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programming to engage youth from communities who are underrepresented at McGill. The Sinclair Laird-McGill STEM program aims to build connections between the McGill University and youth in the Parc Ex neighbourhood.GOALS OF SINCLAIR-LAIRD-McGILL STEM PROGRAM:
1. Create opportunities for elementary students (grades 5 & 6) in a Parc Ex EMSB (English) school to develop relationships with McGill education and science students on a regular basis.
2. Co-plan STEM-related activities that are grounded in youths’ interests and concerns.
3. Support grades 5 & 6 youth in their science-learning as they begin to navigate their transition to high school and help them explore higher education opportunities.
4. Connect McGill education and science student volunteers to the members of the Parc Ex community. Provide McGill students with volunteer and mentorship opportunities to engage in community-based learning to enrich their McGill experience.Qualifications Required (skills and abilities, education, language skills):
Candidate will have or will be pursuing an undergraduate degree in Education, Environment, Science, or Engineering, and you have experience and enthusiasm for learning science alongside youth.- Knowledge or expressed interest in learning about experiential learning both for university students and for youth in their communities.
- Experience planning and conducting inquiry with youth (camps, after-school programming, tutoring, science teaching, science museums).
- Demonstrated commitment to about social justice, and to putting equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into practice.
- Ability to work independently and ability to take initiative to plan programming and do outreach to community groups.
ADDITIONAL SKILS AND QUALIFICATIONS WE CONSIDER IMPORTANT*:
Lived experience in and knowledge of the Parc Ex community, its organizations, and diverse cultural communities- Experience coordinating volunteers and facilitating training workshops
- Spoken and written French fluency/fluency in other languages (especially those used in Parc Ex neighbourhood)
- Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of inquiry methods, project-based learning, design-thinking and you are committed to helping youth develop their own ideas and pursue their own interests.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in community-based work and/or coordination of collaborative projects
- Experience developing and implementing relational projects involving people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse skillsets and experiences.
