Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryReporting to the Director of Security, through the Security Operations Manager and Security Shift Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for the protection of personnel and University property for the three Halifax campuses (Carleton, Sexton and Studley).Key ResponsibilitiesSecurity patrols by foot, automobile and bicycleProvides monitoring of fire and burglar alarmsProvides initial response to fire, burglar alarms, medical emergencies, disturbances and/or suspicious/criminal activitiesProvides traffic and parking enforcementUnder the direction of a Security Shift Supervisor, participates in VIP detailCollects, escorts, transports and/or delivers various documents, deposits and/or personnelProvides key controlProvides information and services to various University departmentsSale and issue of parking permitsProvides first aid and/or emergency assistance in cases of accident or injury involving any student, employee or visitor(s) to the UniversityExercises discretion and confidentiality in relation to University and Security Services mattersMaintain an operational knowledge of a sophisticated electronic access control systemEnforcement of municipal by-laws related to parking enforcement and the initial investigation of provincial statute and criminal code offencesResponse to incidents of assault, sexual assault, attempt/threatened suicide, theft, break and enter, property damage, liquor offences and crowd management with the accurate recording of all incidents attendedRequirement to offer sworn testimony in courtProvide 24 hour access and referral to emergency University servicesRequirement to liaise effectively with local jurisdiction police agenciesPerforms other duties as requiredNoteDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.Required QualificationsGrade 12 and graduate from an accredited law enforcement / security training academyPrevious security experience an assetAbility to maintain certification in Defensive Tactics programs and conflict mediationFamiliar with Windows basicsGood oral and written communication skills essentialMust possess a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and be willing to provide an up to date driver’s abstractBondablePhysically fitGood organizational skillsAbility to take directionReliable and punctualAbility to work effectively with members of the University community and the publicMust be willing and able to work overtimeGeneral safety and WHMIS training an assetAssetsAdditional InformationApplication ConsiderationDiversity StatementDalhousie University commits to achieving inclusive excellence through continually championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
