Large Tutoring

Job Description

About us

Large Tutoring Inc. is a small and growing business run by a UBC Chemical & Biological Engineering graduate committed to bringing top-level education to families in British Columbia. Our students have attended prestigious institutions such as NYU, UC Berkeley, UBC, UofT and much more. We strongly believe in a personalized approach to teaching as this allows us to focus on meeting the unique needs of each student to help them achieve their academic goals.

All of our tutors are not only expert teachers who are dedicated to the success of our students, but are also energetic individuals who make learning fun. We believe the best teachers are individuals who are professional but also enthusiastic about teaching as this encourages students to best engage with the material.

Our Values

To help our students navigate growing complexities in their courses, we ensure that they know exactly where the solutions are coming from. We don’t ask “what did we do?” but “why did we do it?” By understanding the “why”, we ensure that the next time around and every time after, students will be able to apply their knowledge to solve the problem, independently.

At Large Tutoring, we value being adaptable, trustworthy, qualified, modern, and friendly. If we share any of these values then you should consider applying!

Job Description: STEM and Coding Tutor

Are you passionate about sharing Science, Math and Coding subjects with youth from Grade 5 to 1st year University? We are looking for individuals who are capable of conducting 60-90 minute tutoring sessions (sometimes 2+ hours) in a variety of subjects including Math, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Coding at all levels (AP and IB included).

Ideal candidate(s) would start late August working up to 15 hours a week with students. It is expected that the majority of these lessons will be conducted in person in Vancouver (defined as anywhere from Downtown Vancouver to W 60th and UBC to Main Street including Kitsilano, Kerrisdale, West Point Grey, and Dunbar-Southlands) with some lessons being online over Zoom. We are looking for candidate(s) who have the technological set up to work remotely from home, but who is also willing to transit to students’ homes or public locations (ie. coffee shops, libraries, etc.). The chosen candidate(s) will also be required to complete a Police Information Check (PIC) for the vulnerable sector within one month of starting the position. The candidate will be responsible for covering the full cost of completing the PIC. The PIC is the same requirement parents are required to complete before volunteering at local schools. Additionally, this is an independent contractor position, as such, the wage will be $28.00 - $32.00 an hour depending on the level of education and experience. The wage is for time spent tutoring students plus any time spent helping students review documents such as lab reports, problem sets, or other types of assignments (provided it takes over 15 minutes and is pre-approved by the student). Often we conduct introductory meetings with students and their parents at no charge and occasionally we have meetings for the tutor team. These meetings will be paid at a non-premium wage of $16.75 an hour.

We’re looking for role models who share their passion for science math and coding, who can interact effectively through online technology such as Zoom and in-person, and who can support, encourage and instill energy and enthusiasm into challenging topics. Someone who strives to make learning fun and has the ability to connect with their students.

The successful candidate(s) will guide students through the BC Curriculum, but will also adjust the lesson plan to cover additional concepts the students require explanation on. The candidate(s) will also complete progress reports for their students at the end of every month.

Our students are our number one priority. We make an effort to get to know them and understand their unique academic needs. At Large Tutoring, our tutors understand their students and how best to support them. The successful candidate(s) must be able to show commitment, honesty, professionalism, organization, and enthusiasm when interacting with students and others in the company. In supporting our students, we also strive to accommodate all of our tutors to the best of our ability and ensure that they receive the support that they need to be the best they can be.

Role Description:

-Teach a variety of students varying from grade 5 to 1st year University students for up to 10 hours a week but preference is given to those who can do more.

-Be available for introductory meetings, Zoom video conferences, and phone calls with prospective students.

-Create brief lesson plans, “brush up” on any topics that will be covered in lessons, and assign homework materials for students (not worksheets, but suggested questions from the student's textbook, external resources, etc.).

-Willingness to answer students’ questions via email outside of lesson time under appropriate circumstances and timing (not to excessive amounts).

-Be available to work during non-traditional hours. Since many students have school requirements, sessions may run into the evening (up to 10:00 PM) and/or take place on weekends. This will depend on the students on your roster and their availability. All sessions only take place at mutually agreed upon times and locations between the student and the tutor.

-Adapt, encourage and provide feedback to students (and to parents) to achieve real life results.

Requirements

-Higher Level education in Science, Math or Computer Science (including but not limited to: Bachelor’s of Science, Bachelor’s of Applied Science, Bachelor’s of Kinesiology, etc. Completed degree programs or degrees programs in-progress are welcome to apply).

- Ability to conduct lessons for some or all of the following subjects: Math, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Coding at all levels (AP and IB included). (Preference will be given to those who can also teach Statistics, Economics, or other in-demand courses).

- Be able to conduct in person lessons in certain locations in Vancouver defined as anywhere from Downtown Vancouver to W 60th and UBC to Main Street including Kitsilano, Kerrisdale, West Point Grey, and Dunbar-Southlands. (Preference will be given to those with a vehicle)

-Extreme levels of enthusiasm, patience, kindness, and empathy for teaching and for students across diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. We also love bubbly personalities that contain enough energy for 2!

-Background in tutoring, teaching or mentoring is ideal (but desire to help and to succeed is also important). Experience in customer service and working for the benefit of your community are is also valued.

-Ability to develop lesson plans with short notice.

-Experience working and willingness to work with students with learning difficulties, differences, or disabilities (ie. Gifted Learning Disabled, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, ADD, ADHD, or students on the spectrum).

-Excellent communication skills - in person and online - we want students to have fun!

-Work well independently and the ability to facilitate a group discussion

-Strong multitasking and organizational abilities. Scheduling is something that the tutor is largely responsible for and keeping your schedules organized and up to date is crucial to your effectiveness as a teacher.

-Must have a computer/tablet with video conferencing capabilities, as well as a quiet space to video conference with their students OR be willing to do mostly in-person lessons. Preference will be given to individuals who have a tablet and stylus of some kind - though this is not a requirement.

-Flexible schedule and mindset. Our students often require a flexible schedule and we try our best to meet their needs while still keeping these accommodations within reason.

We look forward to hearing from you! We hope you bring passion, energy, enthusiasm, and fun to this position. Please send a cover letter and resume to apply.
